Laaga UNGLI Pe Daag...
Nothing to my credit, but i happen to belong to the most talked about constituency of Gujarat... for outsiders...it's the Gandhinagar constituency....of the 17-18 candidates in the fray, the most happening ones happened to be L.K.Advani, Suresh Patel( from the Congress Party n representing the Patel community, n wanting to cut into the 'patel' votes of Advani....who really cares, not me...) and and....Dr. Mallika Sarabhai(does she need an introduction from me or does she???).....
Arre re re....i've got into the wrong side of things, as usual....i've swayed away from my very purpose of writing this post....it's been 4 days tht i voted, but this stain or mark (or whtever it's called) on the index finger of my left hand is just nt getting lighter (rubbing n rigorous use of soap hv not helped), n it was so very half-heartedly n uglily done by 'the madam' who was assigned this job tht she din't even care tht some of the 'ink' trickled, found its way n spread into the fold at the junction of the nail n the skin.....not to blame her completely.....some of the blame to be shared by the maddening heat (the temperature was a soaring 43*C n it was 2 in the afternoon, wht (in)correct time on my part to choose to vote)...... an indelible mark for a very delible act....irony,irony....
i'm forced to sing, "Laaga ungli pe daag, mitaon kaise?"...but the histrionics n expressions r just nt coming...eeeks......
Nevertheless, i'm an eternal optimist, n as always, i see the brighter side of things......having my finger stained, i'm suddenly in some august company, i'll let these pictures do the speaking......
interesting photostream..whatsay guys?? this has been the most picturesque of my blabberings so far...
if ur still wondering who the man in the brick orange shirt is, it's me.....hmmm....i've dared to place myself amidst these stalwarts(it's perfectly ok by me to daydream, kya harzz hai).... it's a fad to flash ur finger in this season of elections, wht's the harm in joining the bandwagon....lol....
if the mighty Bachchans n Aamir chose white, Hrithik sported blue n Shahrukh grey, Ranbir flaunted pink n John (probably) wore a shade of mauve, i had to look different...but this is just a blemish of a difference.....the bigger n the more important difference is - while all of these were seen brandishing their middle fingers, it was the index finger on my part....reasons could be any...take a google search to find out....am already feeling worn out writing this post.... so i'm the most decent of 'em all, 'coz all of us know wht it means to flash ur middle finger....chhi....
while typing this post, time n again, my attention gets drawn inadvertently to this 'daag' on my 'unglee'....n i'm forced to think tht it shall fade away in time, but wht 'bout the 'daag' tht our 'netas' hv given to the country, shall it ever get washed away?? Not surprisingly, many people refrained from voting n getting their fingers' stained 'coz they din't know whom to vote for....sabhi to 'daagi' hain....

Ye Hai YOUNGISTAN Meri Jaan??
this time round, there's this hype surrounding young political leaders professed to bring in this fresh new 'young' wave into Indian Politics....whom r they kidding?? in the name of 'young', we hv a bevy of players, all of whom hv famous second names n a bright political lineage as their sole credential......
as his only claim to fame, a young 'saffron' Gandhi ridicules the greatest Gandhi , n fanatically lungs out communal remarks in order to make a place n be heard in the deafening political cacophony and later denies it with an absolute straight face, accusing the tapes to be doctored....clearly, not courage or political will, but desperation dictates these moves.....kya ye hai 'youngistan' meri jaan?
Priyanka (Gandhi, not Chopra) spurts into the scene, like the proverbial 'Jack in the box' each time the country prepares for the polls, rooting for 'amma' n 'bhaiya'...... at most other times, she's conspicuous by her absence.....
While Rahul (yet another Gandhi) is already being propagated as a silent crusader n heir apparent to the throne of the PM, one wonders if he really deserves it....or does he?? afterall, wht more does one need than a pretty face, the right surname, chic white cotton 'kurta pyjamas' to become the PM??
Gandhis apart, the young brigade comprises of the Pilots, the Deoras, the Scindias, the Abdullahs, all of whom inherited the positions they now hold from their Daddyjis n it's on tht steam only tht they find an abode in partisan politics..........no name of a young politician strikes me who's made it totally own his own virtues.....
Danson Joseph, general secretary of Jago Party, which represents middle-class professionals frustated by mainstream parties, wails, "There is no place in politics for someone like me who doesn't have money n muscle power and the wrong surname.."(Source: Sunday Times, dated 12/4/09)....tht does reflect the sentiment of the common (young) man on the street....well, tht's the sordid state of affairs of Indian politics today.....
Does India then qualify to be called a democracy in the truest sense of the word? Does Universal Adult Franchise alone make India a democracy? Is it actually of the people, by the people, for the people?? Or is it just for a handful of people to fill their pockets n fulfil their vested interests?? it really strikes a discordant note within people like me, who can either sulk n peeve or feel sorry.....this political mess looks incorrigible to me as of now.....
40% of the country's voters today are under 35 (read- young) n this high decibel hype n hoopla of the political reform in favour of the youth appears nothing more than yet another drama to entice n solicitously woo these naive breed of voters....ouch...it leaves a bad taste in the mouth tht how politicians can make anything work to their advantage.....
n the irony of it all....who've been fielded as the prime-ministerial candidates by the two leading alliances?....an aging octogenarian who flaunts his youth by hitting a gym, and another into his late seventies, whose blocked arteries needed a bypass a few dayzz back.......
Nevertheless, a trickle of 'change' has tacitly made an entry into 'young' minds, n it'll take quite some time for this trickle to become a tide, when we shall hv young political idols to look upto........till tht time ....we, the youth, have 'roadies' to appeal to us n a sip of a beverage down our throats, only to burp out loud - "Ye Hai Youngistan Meri Jaan!!!"

Ye Dance Nahi Aasaan
I was quick to notice this ad in one of the dailies for dance classes by SDIPA (Shaimak Davar's Institute for the Performing Arts) and i thot tht my lazy, laidback, perenially 'vell..la' evenings had suddenly found an occupation, not so easily though.........
Enrolling into the class and actually getting there was quite an uphill task and almost a tale of courage....i struggled hard and thot twice, thrice, a hundred times before mustering enough courage to dial the number to enquire 'bout the classes....was pretty upbeat once i successfully accomplished the first step, 'twas smooth sailing after that till the day when the batch was to start...20th Jan was the date....reached the venue with a lotta shakiness, 'nervous' was written all over my face, was juggling with 'to go' or 'not to go' all throughout and with all the dilly-dallying, eventually decided to take the plunge and venturously ventured into the venturesome venture, a tad precariously though.......it was meant to fall in my lot...
15 hours of dance spread over a month and a half followed by a stage act was quite an experience in itself, replete with pleasant memories and new-found friendships....nt sure how much of dance i've managed to learn , but it did help me tide over my coyness n chagrin, as far as dancing is concerned, which is not less than a battle won for me....it's fun sometimes to persuade urself into indulgences tht don't come easy to u.....
So, i highly recommend this to all - "Dance pe chance maar le" .....but all u 'pappu's who can't dance saala - beware, "Ye dance nahi aasaan, bass itnaa samajh lijei, ek aag ka dariya hai, aur doobke jaana hai..."

Why shud boyz have all the fun...2
Sequels ka zamaana hai...u had Dhoom2 , Lage Raho Munnabhai, Golmaal Returns, Phir Hera Pheri, Sarkaar Raj, et al............tht's a recent phenomenon in Bollywood; Hollywood has been there n done tht for years now....
But it is not this 'sequel' thing tht prompted me to write a sequel to my previous post....hua aisa ki, i had not watched Dev D till then, n after having it, i was tempted to add to my thots expressed in the last post, 'coz it came very close to wht i was trying to put across....
I wud call the maker of this movie a braveheart, for reasons more than one...... it proudly potrayed women as sexual beings, as much as men, without being derogatory....how menacingly flirtatious is it for a heroine to carry a mattress all the way on a bicycle and invite the hero to make it out in the fields and literally 'toot padna' onto him, there's nothin' sinful 'bout it.... n Mahie Gill rocked...and not just the heroine, the other girl (a certain Rasika in the movie) sends an open invite to him for some fun in the murghi ghar, n absolutely makes no bones 'bout it.......
In which hindi movie before this one has a hero asked the heroine for a nude pic of hers and she complies with an equal fervour? is tht crass or vulgar? i think tht's 'liberating' in the true sense of the word...it's ok for love n lust to peacefully co-exist 'coz they aren't sworn enemies, love doesn't lose its purity or truthfulness if u lust for ur partner, sexuality has been n wud always remain an essential part of a man-woman relationship tied by so-called 'love'.........
Sexuality is as old as humanity itself...why shy away from it? why talk 'bout it in hushed whispers? why associate it with a nagging sense of guilt? why mix it with morality? It's just a matter of seeing it in the right perspective..tht's it.............

Why shud boyz have all the fun??
Recent times have seen a lotta movies challenging and/or shattering age-old cliches n stereotypes n letting 'women's sexuality' come to the fore...a few instances-
Priety Zinta has a no-hold, no-guilt-attached premarital live-in sexual relationship wid Saif in Salaam Namaste widout any promises/expectations of committment/marriage, i think it's truly coming-of-age of a mainstream hindi film female lead...
Fashion was truly liberating in this sense...Priyanka Chopra is shown to share the bed wid Arjun Bajwa, her live-in boyfriend as well as Arbaaz Khan widout any pangs of guilt.....guilt comes in only after her unintended one-night stand wid the black stud in a drugged state.....cool......
Priyanka Chopra (again) in Aitraaz lusts for a man (there's no love here) and is also accused of sexual assault...although the character is shown in a negative light, a 'woman's lust minus love' depiction deserves some mention in the positive light....
The size-zero icon Kareena Kapoor has strutted her stuff with a lotta elan not once but twice...pat on the back, though there was nothin' overtly sexual in just a smooch, she initiates the passionate kisses (n not the heroes, who only follow suit) wid Shahid in Jab We Met and Fardeen in Dev....no bravado this, it's true courage...whatsay?
Tabu's 'bold' lines on the sexual needs of a woman in Astitva while clad in a cotton saree, wid oiled n plaited gray hair, n in the bespectacled deglam common woman avatar, probably took the issue to its pinnacle.......
Remember Tabu taking a dig at the aging horse's 'stamina' in Cheeni Kum....hmmm....
Rahul Bose's 30+ in Mumbai Matinee n desperate to lose his virginity....he finds a female counterpart in Life In A Metro's Konkana with similar concerns....is gender equality still an issue???
It still is, i guess.....
Ranbir Kapoor sleeps around wid women n shops for condoms in Bachna Ae Haseeno, which is noticed by Deepika, she still falls for him....had it been the other way round, i mean Deepika shown to be having casual sexual indulgences n knowing this, wud Ranbir still wanna have her?? in the same movie, Bipasha aptly points out tht since she's into a live-in, her character n morality wud be questioned....the guy's excused, the gal bears the brunt....
Likewise in Hey Baby, Vidya accepts Akshay in the final scenes of the movie, inspite of his sexual flings wid the myriad of chics (n boastfully so)...had it been the other way round....how ok wud tht be??
Shilpa Shetty in Life In A Metro regretting her sexual slip for Shiney Ahuja bemoans,"i feel like a slut"....while KK has his way in an expectedly normal manner....
No riddle this, but wht is it tht's a virtue for girls n a vice for boys? the answer, my friends-- is blowin' in the wind....
VIRGINITY........
'Double Standards'- did somebody shout?
For a guy to be a virgin before marriage brings him 'no respect' (read-shame) in his friends' circle, while a woman is labelled a slut, a whore, if she loses her priced possession before tying the nuptial knot...so much of a hue n cry over a piece of tissue, no wonder plastic surgeons hv suddenly found more work in hymenoplasty.....
Virginity- is it an issue at all? must be, otherwise why wud Priety Zinta so blatantly n so unabashedly ask Shahrukh in Dil Se," R u a virgin?", only to his shock....
All said n done, sexual n gender inequality is a reality, to which Priyanka Chopra (in the Hero Honda commercial) has a question to ask - "Why Should Boys Have All The Fun?"

O Guru... Nobody MISUNDERESTIMATED them
"Experience is like a comb that life gives you when you are bald"
"You may have a heart of gold, but so does a hard-boiled egg"
"You got to choose between tightening your belt or losing your pants"
"Statistics are like miniskirts, they reveal more than what they hide"
Now, a different set of quotes of a different genre, replete with malapropisms n linguistic/grammatical errors-
"Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream"
"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we"
"And they have no disregard for human life"
"Rarely is the questioned asked: Is our children learning?"
Two 'ISMs' hv increasingly caught a lotta n gotta lotta attention of late....for those who've still nt realised, i'm talking 'bout- Bush'ism' n Sidhu'ism'...two distinctly distinct phenomenally phenomenal phenomena, as discrete as the sky from the earth... but sharing a common string - the suffix - 'ism'...but the commonality ends here...there's absolutely nothin' more tht's similar.....
re-read the above quotes n u'll make out the stark differences - one is 'bout witticism in its purest sense..n the other...a storehouse of bizarre n irksomely irksome nonsensical stuff....
Bush's vacated office for Obama, but not for nothing...he's left a legacy...tht of Bushisms...Oh God....
While apne Sardarji (S.I.D.H.U. - naam hai Sidhu) did not win as many accolades n laurels as a cricketer, but as a commentator literally..he came, he saw n he conquered a million..a zillion hearts.....i'm a huge fan..a cooler...a split AC of all his sidesplitting one-liners.... O chha gaye guru!
Bushism sucks..Sidhuism rocks
Sidhuism's cool..Bushism's dhool
Sidhuism's fun..Bushism's not done
Has to be...'coz...Ain't nobody like my desi boy....India Rocks...Jai ho...

As "GOOD" As It Gets
Wait a second...gooddammit, aah..i mean goddammit... this post is not to promote the movie..
There's this age-old adage which says - "whatever happens.....happens for the good"...."जो होता है अच्छे के लिए होता है".....this just left me wondering..wht's so good 'bout the following????
- mumbai terror attacks or terrorism as a whole
- pollution
- inflation
- AIDS n HIV positive status
- recession
- mafia,underworld,'bhaigiri'.....
- slums n poverty
- reality TV
i thought..n...i thought more...n not many good things struck my thinking organ, but thank goodness, here's what it managed.....
- terrorism, apart from good-old cricket (which generates a pseudo-patriotism), is the only phenomenon against which all of us stand united, n which generates a strong sense of patriotism...."Good walls make good neighbours" they say, but our not-so-good neighbour fails to realize this...the Mumbai terror attacks also got us to value our NSG commandos, placing them ahead of Shahrukh in a popular vote of idealized heroes...my salute to them as well...most importantly, it forced certain irresponsible politicians to step down, but is that good enough??
- pollution, well...ummm....yeah....couldn't get much on this one...but it does make us ponder a good li'l while upon the fact that all the development happening...is it actually helping us? is all growth growing to decay?? development ke side effects....iss mein achchha kya hai? it gives a good amount of footage to certain celebrities to express concern n garner media attention by talking 'bout global warming....how good is that?
- inflation...the good thing 'bout it is tht it's rapidly seen a downfall in the last few days....good atleast for the incumbent government as the nation prepares itself for the polls...good luck, Manmohanji...
- the only good thing 'bout HIV n AIDS is that it's a fashionable cause to stand for...it does manage some good media scoops (remember the Richard Gere-Shilpa Shetty baap of all embraces)...and and.....the scare of HIV does get people into practising safe sex, whenever fidelity goes for a toss...ahem...
- recession....has it reached India? or is it still a good distance away?? 'm confused....lay offs, unemployment, depression...omigawd, i'm supposed to discuss the good part of it here..maybe it teaches u a good lesson or two 'bout valuing money n surviving in testing times..maybe!!
- mafia, 'bhai'giri, underworld...they gave us one of the most endearing movie characters, bole toh..Munnabhai n also gave Ramgopal Verma some good Company in Satya...
- slums n poverty.....Shobha De's said enough good words for Slumdog Millionaire....need i say more....JAI HO!!!
- reality TV sucks....or does it?? nach baliye...indian idol....comedy circus....roadies..they've really saved a few good hours of our weekends from boredom...or have they? Shilpa Shetty's sagging fortunes were revived, thanks to Big Brother...good for her....humein kya fark padta hai? but i like her yaar...
that's been a pretty good dose of goodness....good's not good any more 'coz it's gotten a good too much... erstwhile PM, Shri Vajpayeeji wud hv sighed -"ye achchhi (good) baat nahi hai" .....yawn...before i start to get a good-for-nothing feel, i'll wind up this goody goody post..
signing off in Big B's KBC style - "take very very good care of yourselves"....goodbye..not for good though...Tuesday, January 6, 2009
The F**king chu*ia
when i was in Delhi, all guys were supposed to use them loudly, that's one way of showing machogiri (ur considered a sissy if u don't)...i don't mean there's something wrong 'bout them, but then what's right 'bout 'em?? well, sometimes using gaalis is the the only way to project ur strength, lest ur taken lightly....so abusing can be a defence actually!! thanks to Roadies, u have them in ur living rooms, so what if they're beeped.....
Talking 'bout the famous 'F' word....it's usage in India, the way i see it, is just for the heck of using it, more often than not (phoren influence, i would call it)... it's fashionable (kinda 'hep') to use as well as it also tends to project that ur "advanced", modern n really urbane...or u may use it when u wanna abuse and still not look indecent....morever, u can use it when girls are around ('coz they use it themselves in the open), they'll actually be impressed....What the f**k...
"F**k" to most Indians is very mild n non offensive, even when used in its most literal sense, it does not have the impact of bh**ch*d and ma**rch*d....most of u would agree to this...anyways "f**k" is an extremely versatile word n can be used in any which way n any which sense u would like to use it...watch this video (the 'F' word) on you tube for an instance....
Coming to desi swear words, there r loadsa 'em...from the seemingly mild ga**u, ha**mi, or ch**ia to the more heavy weight ones.....jus' took a google search for ch**ia n got some interesting meanings n definitions in urban dictionary, i'll quote examples - "A uniquely Indian expletive, endearing and rather harmless compared to other abuses, classifies the recipient as either an idiot, or an ignoramus or someone behaving stupidly, derived from Ch*t, hindi for vagina", " the literal meaning is - out of the ch*t (vagina) - but the word ch**ia in urdu and hindi means 'A fool' or 'idiot'", "very popular hindi slang referring to an arsehole / dickhead / loser in life / generally idiotic person"...n u get many more...
a source further goes on to mention, "The One who has graduated the "S**LE" & "GA**U" knightships, further qualifications include BH**ADI KE, BE**CHOD, B**NCH*D n finally, MA**RCH*D"....ouch...i think this has been a dose of gaalis galore.....
Before i wind up this post, a word 'bout censorship....abuses on TV are beeped (like in Roadies)....what 'bout movies?? i remember watching the first day- first show of JP Dutta's LOC-Kargil (n unfortunately so) at Fun Republic.... most of the heroes-Ajay, Saif, Abhishek et al. very proudly puffed their lungs out shouting "bh**ch*d" and the crowd followed suit n shouted it back in response....probably there's a sense of elation in using these words...later it was muted i heard....even in "Bichchhu", Rani uses "chu**a" but there's no sound.........back in '99, there was a movie starring Akshaye Khanna n Urmila (a forgettable fare) which had a song having words "bh*n di taki" which were later replaced with "chidi ki dukki" (equally ridiculous)....surprisingly, in Rang De Basanti, bh*n di taki/taka has been used all throughout n proudly so......the censors must have gone liberal down the years?? what does "bh*n da taka" actually mean? again taking a google search..this is what i found- a whore's brother or a person who pimps his sister....how ok is that to be used by a lead actor repeatedly in an otherwise critically acclaimed picture?? probably the censors' still felt it's mild...upto them...!! by the same token, whatsay 'bout 'bhootni ke'?? u'll find many movies in recent times, where obscene expetives have been passed uncensored.....
all u d**kheads n a**holes.....more on cuss words in future posts....have a f**kin* time...

A Tale Of Two Cities
Ahmedabad's the place i was born in...'twas a small town then in the early '80s, almost synonymous with simplicity....was nine years old when my parents shifted base to Delhi, where i almost spent a good ten years of my life, before coming back to my hometown, my very own Ahmedabad.
Compared to Ahmedabad, i've spent less time in Delhi...but both the places find an equal space in my heart. The national capital has a charm of its own...there's something 'bout the air there (wahaan ki hawa mein hi kuchh aisee baat hai) that completely holds u....it's a commonly agreed-upon fact that there's a certain natural shine or glow on the faces of Delhiites, which's contagious, 'coz if u stay there for a while, it gets onto ur face as well (believe me, i've experienced this)....not surprisingly then, being in Delhi makes u look more b'ful............was in Delhi recently, for a short while though, i almost instantly fell in love with it all over again despite the fact that time n again it really gave me a 'lost in the crowd' feel...walking round the circle at Rajiv Chowk makes u realise that Delhi's totally not just a desi but also a videshi cultural melting pot......wht a metropolis...i loved it, completely, though it does give u that eerie, unnerving feel that haunts u...
Delhi's nice, not that Ahmedabad's any less.....it's in a league of its own....the kind of growth n development this city's seen in a small time is easily astounding to most people...the kind of negativity(that comes as a part n parcel of development) that u find in most big cities is conspicuous by its absence, n u still have a decent amount of simplicity here (vis-a-vis Delhi, where people have a tendency to complicate even the seemingly simpler things).....n best of all....Ahmedabad very efficiently combines the merits of a small town n a big city....u have the malls n the multiplexes n most facilities u'll get in a Delhi or a Mumbai, yet everything n everyone is still eminently reachable.....
More on Ahmedabad n Delhi in my future posts...
